PhD Student Opportunity Available for NSF Grant
The National Science Foundation announced in August of 2013 that the Energy, Power, and Adaptive Systems (EPAS) Program will support a collaborative research project between the University of New Orleans (UNO), Virginia Tech (VT), and the SNMREC to pursue ocean current turbine farm automated adaptive control solutions. This research involves enhanced numerical models of utility-scale ocean current turbine farms coupled with power generation and electromechanical models to develop autonomous optimized collaborative control of a turbine farm.
In support of this award, the SNMREC is seeking a PhD student to conduct research for a numerical simulation of a farm of buoyant ocean current turbines moored to the sea floor with compliant mooring systems under the joint direction of Drs. J. VanZwieten (SNMREC) and P. Ananthakrishnan (FAU Dept. of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering). The graduate student is expected to begin research during the 2014 Spring semester and will be supported up to three academic years by this award (including a Graduate Research Assistantship and tuition support).
