FAU Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center to Hold Public Lectures
BOCA RATON, FL (April 13, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) within the College of Engineering and Computer Science will hold a series of informative public lectures titled “Ocean Renewable Energy Harnessing the Power of the Sea.” The lectures will take place on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus; Friday April 20 at 4 and 7 p.m. in the Davie West auditorium, 3233 College Avenue, Davie campus; and Monday, April 30 at 4 and 7 p.m. in the Administration Building, Room 119, 5353 Parkside Drive, John D. MacArthur campus, Jupiter.
Each lecture will focus on educating students, faculty, staff and the general public about how the SNMREC’s research is making a unique contribution to a broadly diversified portfolio of renewable energy for the nation’s future. The Center is poised to begin testing an experimental research turbine and is awaiting approval and a federal lease to install and operate a small-scale turbine test berth offshore of Fort Lauderdale.
Sue H. Skemp, executive director of the SNMREC, will be the presenter. Skemp has developed a multi-disciplinary program to address exploration and evaluation of ocean energy potential, specifically ocean current hydrokinetic and ocean thermal energy conversion. She has a broad background in industry, Federal policy and engineering associations. During her 31-year career at Pratt & Whitney, Skemp was instrumental in leading a number of research and technical programs and organizations, including programs funded at more than $110 million with the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
